The use of essential oils in the Cancer care environment

Aromatherapy is one of the most commonly used complementary therapy interventions in the oncology and palliative care environment. Currently the majority of work is focused on whole person care, providing relaxation, improving coping skills and generally improving quality of life. The additional potential of essential oils to assist with specific clinical problems is enormous; their versatility lends them to be used in a variety of ways in this specialised environment.
This class is geared for those already working with essential oils and aromatherapy in the cancer care environment. Its purpose is to promote discussion, link essential oil research to sound and effective practice and improve aromatic interventions for persons with cancer. It also encourages the practitioner to explore the possibility of extending their current ways of working with essential oils to make full use of their therapeutic potential.

Effective interventions for pain and inflammation

As professional aromatherapists, there are times when we are called upon to use our essential oils in direct and sometimes intensive ways for predominantly physical problems of quick onset and medium to high intensity. At times such as these, our holistic skills and gentle treatment options may seem limited and a more intense and clinical approach is what is required. Using essential oils in a clinical way requires a combination of knowledge, experience, confidence and innovation. It requires us to have a sound working knowledge of the condition and the tools that we use coupled with the courage to use them in ways that may at times seem outside of our more gentle, holistic approach to working.
This class is intended to introduce how essential oils may be used in acute clinical situations in a safe and effective manner. Pain and infection are key features of acute states and thus the class takes a research-based and holistic approach to demonstrate how essential oils can be used effectively in these situations.

Building on the existing knowledge and skills of each participant, the course leads the already well-qualified Aromatherapist into a new dimension of essential oil therapeutics. It achieves this not only through the high standard of theoretical expertise it imparts, but through special emphasis of the experiential involvement of the course participants themselves. The course thus provides Aromatherapists with a unique opportunity to explore the various methods of application in a safe and supportive setting. Crucial issues of essential oil safety and research information are also carefully addressed.
Held over three weekend sessions, comprehensive printed course notes and guidance will be given for participants to engage in private home study in between classes.
Weekend one: Essential oil chemistry – the art of making effective therapeutic interventions
Aromatherapists working within a clinical environment require an in-depth working knowledge of the tools that they use. This includes the chemistry of essential oils and related products such as fixed vegetable oils and hydrolats. This information becomes directly relevant when formulating for specific client needs and greatly enhances therapeutic interventions. Rhiannon draws upon research in the field of essential oil chemistry to facilitate a highly informative and enjoyable class, showing clearly how knowledge of essential oil chemistry can be directly applied to aromatherapy practice. It is ideally suited for therapists who have already have a basic grasp of essential oil chemistry and who wish to deepen this area of their knowledge and understanding. However the class assumes a minimal level of chemistry knowledge and thus also covers the essential basics of the topic and takes a step-by-step approach to grasping basic principles.
